For many years, BioNTech and CureVac were direct competitors. Both companies worked intensively on mRNA technologies and competed particularly during the development of the COVID-19 vaccines. While BioNTech was successful with its vaccine, CureVac failed to meet expectations.
Today, the relationship has fundamentally changed: Following a period of legal disputes over patents, BioNTech acquired its former competitor. In doing so, BioNTech secured valuable expertise and patents that could play a key role in future mRNA-based therapies – such as in cancer treatment.
This development impressively demonstrates how competition can transform into strategic collaboration when the focus is on shared goals.
According to WirtschaftsWoche, a key difference between the two companies has long been their openness to external expertise. While BioNTech specifically brought in external specialists, CureVac relied more heavily on internal structures.
